TOUR de KOOTENAY NORTH
Day 3, Nakusp to Trout Lake, 79 kms
There are a lot of hills on this section of highway. Some long hills, some steep hills and some more hills. This is a tough day that tests our mental fortitude. We all pass, some better than others. Our leg muscles are slightly mushy. A good Gatorade day. Weather is hot again. It feels very good to slide into Trout Lake and the historic Windsor Hotel. Nice clean rooms and excellent dinner
Day 4, Trout Lake to Kaslo, 118 kms
A hearty breakfast and a bag lunch prepared for us by the friendly staff at the Windsor Hotel starts off day 4. This is to be our longest ride of the trip. The gravel road from Trout Lake to Gerrard is in excellent shape, featuring many great views of the lake and mountains. The road from Gerrard follows the meandering Lardeau River and is very scenic as well as being an easy ride since it follows the old rail grade. A short lunch break at Cooper Creek, then we're back into the undulations along Kootenay Lake. Eight hours after we leave, we pull into the Kaslo Motel and finally unglue ourselves from the bike seats, a tired but happy group
Day 5, Kaslo to New Denver, 58 kms
We are truly blessed by fine restaurants in the Kootenays. A well-fed group headed up the hill out of Kaslo into another spectacular day. This day is highlighted by a ride along an old wagon trail, a self-propelled trolley ride over a raging creek and several flat tires. The Galena Trail from Three Forks to New Denver is awesome. This is a great section of trail maintained by the locals and enjoyed by many. We arrive at Marsh Cabin in the early afternoon. Finally an easy day and a chance to rest some aching muscles
Day 6, New Denver to Nelson, 85 kms
Another early start in preparation for a big day today. We're going into uncharted territory - up Lemon Creek Road to Six Mile Lakes and down to Willow Point on Kootenay Lake. This proves to be our toughest challenge of the trip.
We start off strong, charging up the 6 km Silverton Hill in record time, then down into Slocan for breakfast. The first few kms of Lemon Creek Road are great, slowly wandering along the creek, nice and cool in the shade. Then things start getting tougher. The road gets steeper and the sun gets hotter.
