ELAINE'S INTERVIEW
WITH HARRY KILLOUGH

The other day I went out to hunt down Harry Killough-and guess where I found him? Yes! At the A&W.

I asked for an update on the happenings along the Columbia & Western railbed and he affably obliged.

A Project Manager, Leigh Ann Johnson of Kelowna, has been appointed. Her work area is from Castlegar all the way to McCulloch. Her firm is called Katim Enterprises, with the main focus acting as consultant for the planning of community projects.

WE REMEMBER
Friends of Parks and Trails has lost another original member of our group, Madge Hollington. Jack and Madge were willing participants in all our activities until a few years ago when their long and enthusiastic lives began to wane. Madge died on Sept. 6th, 2004, at 90 years of age when her strong heart finally stopped beating. Jack continues to live in their home at Castlewood Village

She has been working with Harry as he is the representative of the Columbia and Western Trail Society, the local stewardship group.

The main emphasis of the early work is safety. Objectives are to secure the tunnels, get planks and rails on the trestles, repair the washouts, of which there are six at present.

Harry and Gordon Zaitsoff agreed that local hire was the priority. Everyone was pleased that White Contracting of Castlegar won the bid. The latest good news is that Mr. White has permission to work all winter. The equipment is on site already and the job started.

For Harry this represents a dream come true. He has worked voluntarily on this railbed for seven years whenever seasons permitted, often at some risk since he was trespassing on CPR land!

But he feels that in the seven years, he, often alone, sometimes with helpers, has stabilized the grade for 80 kilometres and made the restoration much easier. Harry dedicated himself to this piece of history and now feels it was all worthwhile.
